I work with a lot of overseas collaborators but recently I've started advertising to work with songwriters closer to home and I soon met Jasmine Confrey, a talented young lady from Dublin who had some lyrics and vocals and needed to turn these into a song. We sat down for an hour or two and got the bones of the song structure down on guitar. I then produced the backing track and Jasmine came in another day to lay down the lyrics. I mixed the results and you can listen to the final track here. Jasmine is singing and I made all the music and played the instruments.
What's important for budding songwriters to know is how important it is to craft a song before you start thinking about production and the fancy stuff. If you don't have a song that sounds pretty good on its own with just a guitar or piano - then you may not have a song at all! You can go to 'producers' out there that will be quite happy to take your money, throw a song together and the results will very likely be disappointing. You need to craft the song, get to know it, feel it, then perform it - and all this will be heard in the results.
Myself and Jasmine hope to work on more stuff in the near future! I wish her well. She is a talented young lady.
